Ice Off Ballet for Ice Skaters

Ice skaters take ballet classes to increase their awareness of how to hold their bodies. The objective is to transfer a natural grace to their skating.  Classical ballet stresses how to use the arms, legs, and head with fluidity. Further with off-ice stretching and conditioning skaters acquire the body flexibility with a focus to elongate their muscular tone. Dancing teaches the coordination of positions of the feet, essential to properly execute advanced footwork, spins, spirals, and jumps.

Ballet works to strengthen and develop articulation and movement that is equal on the left and right sides of the body. Too many skaters concentrate on their dominate side and ignore or under-develop the side that is weaker. This often leads to skaters struggling with performing more difficult steps and movements in the future.

The point of practicing off ice is to provide the opportunity to enhance skating skills, while reducing the risk of
injuries by acquiring the strength and confidence to perform new elements for competitive programs.
