Teacher

  • Natasha Miroshnyk

Debra Maxwell began her dancing as a young girl at the Dayton Ballet Company School. She graduated from The Boston Conservatory during which time she danced with the Boston Dance Theatre. Directly following her education Debra traveled to Europe to study with such greats as Hector Zaraspe, Donald MacGayle, Glen Tetley and Twyla Tharp. She danced with the London Masulli Ballet Company in Lisbon, Portugal. Upon returning to the United States she spent the following 4 years studying at American Ballet Theatre in New York City with Patricia Wilde, Gabrella Darvash and Maggie Black. She then relocated to the west coast and focused on teaching in Los Angeles with Stanley Holden, Jane Fonda, Westside Ballet and Roland Dupree. During that time she wrote, produced and appeared in her own instructional children video “I CAN DANCE”. The video was distributed nationwide by Kultur Video and saw years of success. After several years in Los Angeles Debra moved to Orange County where she has taught at several of the area’s top professional dance studios.

Debra is an American Ballet Theatre certified teacher who has completed ABT Teachers Training Intensive in Pre-Primary through Level 3 of the National Teachers Curriculum.

Debra also is certified in Mat Pilates.

Adult Intro to Ballet FAQs

Do I need to buy ballet slippers?

We highly recommend that you purchase a pair of ballet slippers. They cost about $25, and some models may require elastic bands to be sewn on before the first class (some slippers come with the elastics already sewn on). We work closely with Dancer’s Choice in Aliso Viejo, and the owner Grace Lee can set you up if you tell her you’re a beginning adult student with Ivan Pryntsev. You can also order them online from Discount Dance Supply and other retailers. Slippers are commonly available in pink and black, but please feel free to wear whatever color you wish.

What do I wear?

Some adults wear a leotard, pink or black tights, and a ballet skirt. Others wear yoga pants/leggings (ankle-length or shorter so you don’t trip) and a fitness or regular t-shirt. Just wear something comfortable that will allow you to bend and stretch. If you have long hair, put it in a bun or ponytail to keep it out of your eyes.

Who is this course best for?

This course is primarily for adult women and men, age 19 and older, who have very little to no ballet experience. It would also be great for someone who has taken a break from dancing, and wants to ease back in before joining our intermediate/advanced adult class. Advanced-beginner and intermediate-level students may also benefit from reviewing and revisiting the basics. Our current adult students range in age from their 20’s to their 60’s, with most somewhere in between.

What if I still have questions?

Please feel free to contact Ivan Pryntsev via email info@pbadance.com or phone 949-910-1011 (call or text), We want this to be a good experience for everyone who wants to learn ballet. We hope that this online Intro Course will provide you with basic skills, to prepare for when we can safely hold an Adult Beginner Class in the studio… hopefully very soon!
